ST. PATRICK'S DAY NEARS

FOUR-LEAF CLOVER

I know a place
where the sun is like gold,
And the cherry blooms
burst with snow,
And down underneath
is the loveliest nook,
Where the four-leaf clovers grow.

One leaf is for hope,
and one is for faith,
And one is for love, you know,
And God put another in for luck -
If you search,
you will find where they grow.

But you must have hope,
and you must have faith,
You must love and be strong
- and so -
If you work, if you wait,
you will find the place
Where the four-leaf clovers grow.

Maybe St. Pat likes apples, too!

CAN YOU RELATE?

              HOUSECLEANING

I find that I have reached the stage
That is commonly known as "ripe old age",
And I'm called each day to decide the fate
Of things I've allowed to accumulate.

The things I don't need I can always find,
From two to a dozen of every kind;
But what I do need escapes the eye
Until I return from the store with another buy.

And what is left over, being sly as a fox,
I know I may need, so it goes in a box.
That is surely the reason I've run out of space
With bundles and boxes all over the place.

From morning till evening I spend every day
Just trying to find something I've laid away.
Some comfort I find; it isn't all bad,
For I find many things I didn't know I had.

So day after day I go round and round,
Continually losing more than I've found.
I must change my program before I am sunk
Or just disappear submerged in my junk.

DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that:
  • Honey never spoils, even if it's crystalized
  • The tannin in tea is a natural meat tenderizer
  • You can clean your dentures by soaking them in white vinegar, over-night is best, but shorter times more often works well also
  • You can use half as much cornstarch as flour to thicken sauces and gravy
And I've heard that:
  • You can dry nail polish with non-stick cooking spray (I haven't tried it but it might be worth a try)
  • Adding a tablespoon of olive oil to your dogs' food each day helps alleviate shedding (I'm trying this but have no results yet)
  • A wad of aluminum foil makes a good pot scrubber in a pinch
  • And  white rings and spots on wood can be removed with miracle whip wiped on and left for one hour.
This photo just proves that I'm ready for some warmer weather!!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

Keeping it light!!
                        STUCK UP VALENTINE
In the daze
of watermelon brine
and doses,
Through the haze
my loving Valentine
discloses
that the maze
of rings stuck his to mine
(our noses).

CUTE CUPIDS
Red is the color
Of Valentine hearts
White lace and arrows
Are some of the parts.
Some folks like candy
And some of them don't.
Cupids are cute,but
Wear clothes?
                                    No they won't!

WOMEN

In 1978 my mother gave me a small book titled 'Apples of Gold', compiled by Jo Petty.  Mom passed away in March last year.  I wish she knew how much enjoyment I have gotten from that book.

Here are some excerpts on women:

  • Mothers, as well as fools, sometimes walk where angels fear to tread.
  • Any housewife, no matter how large her family, can always get some time alone by doing the dishes.
  • Women are here to stay, let's make the most of them.

TRANSPARENCY

Another treasure from Kevin Underhill in"Lowering the Bar"

The year was 2012

Mar. 30:
President Barack Obama receives an award from the organizers
of the Freedom of Information Day Conference, presented
at the White House by advocates of government transparency. The
media is not invited to the event, which is not listed on the President’s
calendar, takes place behind closed doors, and is not transcribed.
“The irony is,” one participant says, “that everything the
President said [about transparency] was spot-on. I wish people
had heard what he had to say.”

(In my opinion, government transparency is an    illusion.  We hear a lot of great sounding words,
but do they mean what we hear?  Or something else...I'm just sayin'.)

IT IS SAID

It is said that:
  • If you rinse the pan with cold water before warming milk, it will not stick to the pan.
  • To add color and flavor to a pot roast stir a teaspoon of paprika into the liquid.
  • If you add a tablespoon of vinegar to the water before poaching eggs, the whites will not spread.
  • And putting hardened brown sugar into a tightly closed jar with a slice of orange will soften it.  (I tried putting some in a heavy plastic bag with the orange slice and microwaved  for a few moments.  It worked well for the recipe at hand.)

in one apple,
But only God can count the apples
in one seed."

IT MADE ME LAUGH

Dec. 21:
The Transportation Safety Administration shuts down a
Louisiana airport after an employee notices a “suspicious package”
during screening that seems to contain a mysterious bulky
object with wires attached. The package proves to contain a headmounted
mining light and a frozen chicken stuffed with crawfish,
items that the TSA’s scanning technology is apparently unable to
distinguish from a chicken-shaped bomb.

BACK IN KANSAS

When my family moved from Kansas to Colorado, my sister and I were small children.  Our conversations for some time were peppered with the phrase 'back in Kansas'.  With that in mind and given the extended drought conditions in this area this writing hit home:

            Memo to:  The Lord
        Date:        February, 1981
        Re:           Kansas Weather

         Have you noticed, Lord?
I hate to mention it again,
         But we need rain.
The ground is baked and dry -
         Even cracked in parts -
And each day brings a cloudless sky.

And while I'm at it, Lord,
         It's unseasonably warm.
         It's not yet March,
But all the buds are great
And I'm afraid a sudden frost
Will blight the life at springtime's gate.

         I'm just your servant, Lord,
And you're in charge, of course.
         I only wondered
If you'd heard our point of view?
But now I've had my say
So, Lord, I'll leave our cares to you.

I KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN ANGELS

I know there have been angels
That have protected me
When I ventured into harm's way
And was too blind to see.
I know there have been angels
That were sent to save the day
When I needed help so desperately
I was afraid to pray.
Our lives are filled with miracles
We can't explain away
When a divine intervention
Leaves nothing more to say.
Oh, how we take for granted
The blessings we receive
Because we have too little faith
To accept what we believe!
I know there have been angels;
I know there will be more,
And gladly I'll receive them
When they knock upon my door.

ADD A DOG

This is Cochise, a stray who came to live here a year ago.
Birthday blossoms from Brandy to brighten the winter!!

And a quote to help warm these chilly days:

"There's an angel by your side
And in her you can confide.
She's sweet and kind and always there
To keep you in her loving care."

KETCHUP

An uplifting quote:

"For angels walk among us
in ways we do not know
to shelter  us beneath their wings
and set our hearts aglow."
