THE COLD WITHIN

This was clipped from a church bulletin in 1985:
`
THE COLD WITHIN
`
"Six humans trapped by happenstance
In black and bitter cold
Each one possessed a stick of wood,
Or so the story is told.
`
Their dying fire was in need of logs
But the first man held his back,
For on the faces around the fire
He noticed that one was black.
`
The next man looking across the way
Saw one not of his church,
And he wouldn't bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.
`
The third man sat in tattered clothes
He gave his coat a hitch,
Why should he put his log to use
To warm the idle rich?
`
The rich man sat back and thought
Of the wealth he had in store,
And how to keep what he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor.
`
The black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from sight;
For all he saw in his stick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white.
`
The last man of this forlorn group
Did nothing except for gain,
Giving only to those who gave to him,
Was the way he played the game.
`
Their logs held tight in death's still grasp
Is proof of human sin,
They didn't die of the cold without,
They died from the cold within."

A LETTER TO ELINJO

I have missed your excellent blog and our "conversations".  I sincerely regret that the problem developed and eagerly await your return.
I had somehow overlooked a comment that you sent back in April and want to thank you now for the info.  I would have taken the same path.  Hope you are well and will remain so.  Sincerely, Bev

JUST TO MAKE YOU SMILE

The following is from a newspaper clipping saved back when Reagan was president:
A man in Boston, Massachusetts was the doting owner of two cats whose names he proudly displayed on his front door.  After (assuming) city census takers took the names from the door while he was away, one of the cats was summoned for jury duty.  She was subsequently disqualified, not because she was a cat, but because she couldn't speak English.

because a 'could-be' is a 'maybe' who is reaching for a star.
I'd rather be a 'has-been' than a 'might-have-been', by far;
for a 'might-have-been' has never been, but a 'has' was once an 'are'."  ~~Milton Berle

ON EATING A COLD MANWICH

Earlier today I discovered Big Bear, the plush Siamese, sitting in the laundry room, positioned as if he had been sent to sit in the corner.  He was, however, not wearing a dunce cap.  The dunce, disguised as Chloe Hobo the dog, was standing behind him wagging happily and appeared to be peeking over his shoulder.  I stopped to see if perhaps they were watching a spider, but didn't see one.  (They have been known to fight over a moth.)
`
Later, the two of them joined up with Harry, the sentinel (on break) and met me in the kitchen to inquire about lunch.  Then just as I sat down to enjoy a freshly made manwich (prepared with the new chunky sauce, dolloped onto a slice of cheese on the bun and topped with sweet relish) the dunce came roaring by, yapping loudly, hair standing.  She headed for the laundry room with the two cats scrambling after her.
`
Naturally, I had to drop the sandwich and run when I heard a 'scree, scree,scree' sound.  That must have been quite a sight, me, the cats and the dunce dog all running madly through the house.  When I arrived in the laundry room, I discovered the source of the noise.  There, in the very same afore-mentioned corner was a baby bird, not tiny-tiny, possibly a blackbird just out of the nest.  Then came the scramble to get everyone out of the room, except the baby. Whew!
`
My son then took the baby bird out and released it into the "wild".  And you know what?  The cold manwich wasn't so bad.

A QUOTE FROM GLEN BECK

"Gore's $9 million mansion

Al Gore once promised to dump all the climate related money he made back into the climate. Technically he's keeping the promise, as he just bought another mansion. This $9 million monster probably does put a lot back into the climate. Don't worry, Al probably planted a lot of trees to off-set the house…or something like that."
~~~
I didn't PROMISE not to write about politics..  I just couldn't resist this quote.  Maybe what bothers me so much is that Mr. Gore (and others) reportedly make millions of dollars from touting an un-proved issue.  The "facts" surrounding man-caused global warming are slowly being refuted , but probably won't be swung around in time to save future generations from paying back the enormous sums of money being being poured into it.
Yes, a clean, green Earth is a worthy project, but will our children and their children  be able to enjoy it while they pay back what we've spent on it?
